Meet Casey
Matthew Casey Morsell is an American athlete, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and social justice advocate.
Born and raised in Fort Washington, MD, Casey is the son of Michael and Jeannette Morsell, both are two alums of the University of Maryland College Park. He has one brother, Mike Morsell, who is five years older and influenced Casey’s emergence into sports.
They both started as two-sport (basketball and baseball) athletes for the Fort Washington Cannons Boys and Girls Club. While playing basketball for different grassroots teams across the DMV area, Casey enrolled in St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. As a student-athlete for the Cadets, he received numerous academic and athletic honors throughout his four years. The most notable award was the DC Gatorade Player of the Year Award for his 2018-2019 season.
Since graduating, both Casey and Mike serve as donors of the St. John’s Annual Fund as a means to enhance the education and character development of St. John’s students.
Casey signed his National Letter of Intent to the University of Virginia in the fall of 2018. During his two-year stint in Charlottesville, Casey had a positive impact on and off the basketball court.
He studied government and served as a member of UVA BOSS (Black Student-Athlete Offering Service and Support), all while playing a key role in the Cavaliers’ two winning basketball seasons during his time there.
In May of 2021, Morsell transferred and enrolled in North Carolina State University. This period was the beginning of NCAA’s NIL, which is a rule that allows student-athletes to control and profit off their name, image and likeness. This propelled Morsell to join NC State’s ALPHA Ambassador’s, which is a program that focuses on equipping and supporting Wolfpack student-athletes with resources to maximize their personal brands and NIL opportunities.
When asked about the impact of NIL:
Casey graduated from NC State with a Political Science bachelor’s degree and began to pursue his entreprenurial passions off the court in the spring of 2023. Since the age of 6, one of Casey’s biggest passions has been community service.
This passion started from volunteering at nursing and assisted living homes across the Washington DC area. Growing up, he would make it a priority to serve the elderly and less fortunate periodically.
His most cherished donation was in 2017 when he provided over 100 hoodies to the Salvation Army as a means to provide warmth and comfort for less fortunate individuals in his community.
