2025 Recap
AUGUST 4TH - 8TH
DAY 1
Year three of the Casey Morsell Skills Academy tipped off in exciting fashion, marking our largest camp to date with 120 campers in attendance. Each participant received their official camp shirt, creating a sense of unity and energy right from the start.
The day opened with a dynamic warm-up session led by Jabari Hawkins, former Shaw University basketball staff member, who set the tone with intensity and focus. Following warm-ups, campers were divided by age group and rotated through skill development stations. Each station was led by a coach, allowing players to learn in smaller groups and focus on fundamental drills designed to sharpen their game.
Midday, campers were treated to an outstanding lunch courtesy of Empire Eats, whose support helped fuel the athletes for the rest of the day. Afterward, the group was joined by a special guest, ABC11 Reporter and Sports Anchor Trayvon Miles. Trayvon shared his personal journey in sports, highlighting the many different career paths within the industry beyond playing. His inspiring message resonated deeply with the campers, reminding them that their passion for the game can translate into a variety of opportunities. Campers also had the chance to meet him personally and capture the moment with a photo.
The afternoon concluded with a full-camp photo before players broke into teams for live games. This portion of camp is always a highlight, as it gives participants the chance to put their new skills to the test in real competition. The energy was high, the effort was strong, and the first day set the perfect tone for what promises to be another impactful year of growth, learning, and basketball at the Casey Morsell Skills Academy.
DAY 2
The second day of the Casey Morsell Skills Academy continued the momentum and excitement from Day 1, giving campers another opportunity to learn, grow, and compete. The morning began with an energized warm-up before participants quickly transitioned into their skill development stations. Working in small groups allowed campers to focus on fundamentals while receiving hands-on instruction from their coaches.
Following the morning session, the camp welcomed a special guest, Will Whitley, a renowned NCAA and NBA sneaker artist and designer. Will shared his creative journey and brought along some of his work, giving campers an inside look at how passion for sports can intersect with art and design. His presence was both unique and inspiring, showing participants another way the game of basketball can open doors to unexpected careers.
After lunch, the camp was joined by Kadin Shedrick, University of Texas standout and former teammate of Casey Morsell at the University of Virginia. Kadin spoke to the group about his personal journey in basketball, offering encouragement and perspective that truly resonated with the campers. His message, coupled with the opportunity to take photos and sign autographs, left a lasting impression on the group.
The day concluded with live scrimmages, where players had the chance to apply the skills they’ve been developing in real game situations. The energy on the court was electric, as campers competed with focus and enthusiasm.
DAY 3
Day 3 of the Casey Morsell Skills Academy carried forward the same energy, focus, and enthusiasm that defined the first two days of camp. The morning began with a group warm-up that set the tone for another day of development and competition. Campers then transitioned into their skill stations, where coaches emphasized both fundamentals and in-game application. The growth and confidence shown by the players were clear indicators of the progress made throughout the week.
Following the morning sessions, campers gathered to hear from Kanique Miree, a massage recovery specialist who spoke about the importance of recovery and body maintenance for athletes. Kanique shared practical tips on stretching, rest, and hydration — reminding campers that taking care of their bodies is just as essential as the time they spend on the court. Her insight gave players a new appreciation for the off-court habits that support long-term athletic success.
After the session, campers enjoyed another delicious lunch provided by Chick-fil-A of Waverly Place. We are extremely grateful for their continued support and generosity throughout the camp, keeping our athletes energized and ready to perform each day.
The afternoon wrapped up with team scrimmages, giving players another opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned over the past few days. The competition was spirited and fun, and coaches were proud to see the campers’ hard work translate into live play.
DAY 4
Day 4 of the Casey Morsell Skills Academy continued the momentum of an already outstanding week. The day began with the familiar morning warm-up, where campers brought great energy and focus before transitioning into their skill development stations. By now, the improvement across all age groups was evident and campers were executing drills with confidence and demonstrating the lessons they’ve learned throughout the week.
After a productive morning, campers enjoyed a well-deserved lunch provided by City of Oaks Catering, featuring a classic hot dog meal that was a hit among the group. We are thankful for their support and contribution to another great day of camp.
The highlight of Day 4 came in the afternoon, when NC State basketball standout DJ Burns stopped by to spend time with the campers. DJ spoke about his journey in basketball, emphasizing the value of persistence, teamwork, and maintaining a positive attitude both on and off the court. His message resonated with the young athletes — but the excitement didn’t end there. After his talk, DJ joined the campers on the court, participating in 1-on-1 challenges and shooting games that brought the gym to life. The campers loved every minute of the interaction, and it was clear that DJ’s presence left a lasting impression. It was another memorable day that perfectly captured what the Casey Morsell Skills Academy is all about: development, connection, and unforgettable experiences on and off the court.
DAY 5
Championship Friday is always a special day at the Casey Morsell Skills Academy. Campers competed for titles in King of the Court, the Hotshot Competition, and 5v5 games, bringing great energy and teamwork to close out an incredible week.
After the games, campers gathered for the awards ceremony. The Knockout Competition, presented by Journey League, recognized one of the most exciting moments of the day. Journey League’s mission is to use basketball to enhance the physical and social well-being of teens and adults with disabilities and special needs. This message that aligns closely with the community spirit we strive to build each year. The Hotshot Award was presented by Bricks & Minifigs, a local store specializing in new and pre-owned LEGO® sets, minifigures, and unique builds. We appreciate their support and creativity in helping celebrate our campers’ hard work.
To finish out the day, DJ Horne, NC State basketball standout and author, spoke to the camp and shared insights from his journey. He also sold signed copies of his book, Why Not Me? Why Not Us?, inspiring campers to chase their goals with confidence and belief. The kids made this camp truly special. Their enthusiasm, effort, and love for the game remind us why we do this each year. Year 3 of the Casey Morsell Skills Academy was one to remember, and we can’t wait to do it all again next summer.
